About Colorado

Colorado is little known to the rest of the world. This scenery-filled state is surrounded by Wyoming, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Kansas, Utah and New Mexico. Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico and Utah meet at a point known as Four Corners. The climate in Colorado varies by elevation. The higher the elevation, the more the decrease in temperature. Its population is about 5 million and the capital, Denver.

On February 28, 1861 President James Buchanan signed an act of Congress setting up the free Territory of Colorado. The Colorado River was believed to originate in the territory, which is where the state name of Colorado comes from. On August 2, 1876 President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation and the state was admitted into the Union as the 38th state.
