On February 28, 1861 President James Buchanan signed an act of Congress setting up the free Territory of Colorado. The Colorado River was believed to originate in the territory, which is where the state name of Colorado comes from. On August 2, 1876 President Ulysses S. Grant signed a proclamation and the state was admitted into the Union as the 38th state.
